Trata-se de um aglomerado de plásticos, identificada em 97 no meio do Oceano Pacífico num local onde as correntes oceânicas do Pacífico Norte se encontram, e ela está em constante crescimento. Esta ilha em que não se pode caminhar, ou melhor, esta sopa de plástico já tem dimensões maiores que os EUA, e com uma profundidade de cerca de 10metros.
Todo o lixo que é esquecido nas praias da costa Este da América do Norte, Japão e dos países Asiáticos, são levados pelas correntes para esta ilha, onde se estima que 70% da sua composição é de sacos de plástico ou derivados do mesmo.
Isto tem um enorme impacto nos ecossistemas. A composição da água naquela área já apresenta mais pedaços de plásticos do que plânctones.
Milhares de albatrozes acabam por morrer à fome de estômago cheio: não porque estão fartos de comer peixes e outros animais do mar, mas porque ingerem desde tampas de garrafa, isqueiros, canetas, pauzinhos de cotonetes (nunca percebi porque é que se encontram tantos nas praias), etc... acabando por não conseguir engolir mais nada.
Esta tartaruga cresceu com uma anilha de plástico à volta do corpo.
Enquanto muitos ecologistas estão de olho no ar (poluição atmosférica), esquecem-se deste problema muito maior do que o mundo imagina, muitas pessoas não sabem que isso possa existir.

Agora pense que isso tudo vem de uma cadeia de acontecimentos que talvez começa a aparecer ai em sua casa ou na rua contigo, basta jogar um saco plástico ao chão. Enquanto formos dependentes de produtos derivados de plásticos isso será inevitável, temos que ver o problema a sério e optar por embalagens orgânicas e não só recicláveis, pois ainda há muitos países e culturas no mundo (asiáticos) que não tem uma cultura de respeito pela natureza.
Resumindo, não adianta nos aqui estarmos reciclando enquanto eles não.
